The fridge isn't cooling — but the freezer is fine
If the freezer freezes and the fridge is warm, your compressor is alive and well — the cold is being made, it just isn't getting through. Knowing that can save you a very large bill, because most people assume the worst immediately.
The problem
The freezer runs and freezes normally, but the fridge compartment is warm or barely cool. Food spoils fast, milk turns. You may see ice built up on the back panel inside the freezer, hear a loud or stuttering fan — or hear no fan at all when you open the freezer door.
Likely causes
The evaporator (circulation) fan has stopped
The number one cause in modern fridges. The cold is made in the freezer and pushed down to the fridge by a fan. If that fan stops — jammed with ice, or a dead motor — the freezer over-freezes and the fridge stays warm. Quick test: open the freezer and press the door switch. You should hear a fan.
Ice built up on the evaporator (failed defrost cycle)
Every fridge has an automatic defrost cycle. If the defrost heater or its timer fails, ice slowly packs onto the coil behind the freezer's back panel until it blocks the airflow completely. The symptoms look identical to a dead fan — a manual defrost tells the two apart.
Air vents blocked by food
A silly cause that happens constantly: a box or a big dish parked right in front of the vent between freezer and fridge, cutting off the cold air. Find the internal vents and clear them.
A worn door seal
If the door doesn't seal, warm air leaks in continuously and the fridge fights a losing battle. The paper test: shut a banknote in the door and pull — if it slides out easily, the seal is done.
A dust-clogged condenser coil
Behind or underneath the fridge is a coil that dumps heat. Choked with dust and pet hair, the fridge can't shed that heat and overall cooling weakens. Half an hour of cleaning restores it.
Thermostat or control board
Less likely, but possible. If everything above checks out and the problem persists, this is where the homeowner's job ends.
Fix it — step by step
- Check the settings and the vents firstConfirm the fridge is set to 3-5°C and the freezer to -18°C. Then clear any food or packaging parked in front of the internal air vents.Air can't circulate in a fridge packed solid. Leave gaps between things.
- Listen for the fanOpen the freezer door and press the door switch with your finger (the one that kills the light). You should hear a fan spin up. No sound means a stopped fan — or ice holding it.A scraping or chattering noise means the fan blade is hitting ice — same treatment: defrost.
- Look at the back panel inside the freezerEmpty the freezer and look at the rear plastic panel. Ice packed on it, around it, or around the vents means you've found your problem.A light frost is normal. A wall of ice blocking the vents is not.
- Unplug it and defrost for 24 hoursEmpty both compartments completely (food into a cooler), pull the plug, and leave both doors open for a full 24 hours with towels on the floor. This melts all the hidden ice.Eight hours does not clear the ice behind the panel. Give it 24 — this is the single most important step on the page.
- Do not chip the ice with anything sharpNo knife, no screwdriver, no hairdryer held against the coil. The pipes behind that panel are as thin as a drink can. One hole means a refrigerant leak and a dead fridge.If you're in a hurry: a hairdryer on its coolest setting, 30cm away, constantly moving. Patience is safer.
- Clean the condenser coilWith the fridge still unplugged, pull it out from the wall and vacuum/brush the black coil and the fan underneath or behind it. Dust here strangles cooling.Homes with pets: this coil clogs with hair astonishingly fast. Clean it every six months.
- Test the door sealShut a banknote in the door and try to pull it out. You should feel clear resistance. Test all the way around the door.A stiff seal can be revived with warm soapy water and a smear of petroleum jelly. A cracked one needs replacing.
- Plug it in and watch it for 24 hoursPlug it back in and let it run empty for 4-6 hours before you reload it. Put a glass of water in the fridge and measure it a day later — it should be around 4°C.If it cools after the defrost but the problem returns in a few weeks, the defrost heater has failed → technician.

When to call a professional
Call a technician if: the ice returns within weeks of a full defrost (defrost heater or timer); you still hear no fan at all after a complete defrost (fan motor); the compressor — the black cylinder at the back, low down — is running very hot and clicking off; or neither compartment cools at all. Freezer's cold but the fridge is warm — is the compressor dead?
Almost certainly not, and this is the most useful line on the page. If the freezer freezes, the compressor is running and there's refrigerant in the system. The problem is getting that cold down to the fridge: a fan, ice, or a blocked vent. All far cheaper.
What temperature should a fridge be?
Fridge 3-5°C, freezer -18°C. Colder wastes electricity; above 5°C and food starts spoiling. A cheap fridge thermometer settles the argument.
Why does ice build up on the freezer's back wall?
A little frost is normal. Heavy build-up means either humid air is leaking in past a bad door seal, or the automatic defrost cycle has failed. A manual defrost fixes it temporarily — but if the ice comes back quickly, the defrost heater needs replacing.
The fridge runs constantly and never cuts out
Usually: a dusty condenser coil, a worn door seal, or the fridge jammed against the wall with no ventilation. It needs 5-8cm of clearance at the back and sides.
Can I speed up defrosting with a hairdryer?
Very carefully. Coolest setting, 30cm away, constantly moving — and never aimed straight at the coil or pipes. Concentrated heat warps the plastic and can damage a pipe. Open doors and time is the safe method.
Food is freezing in the fridge compartment
The opposite problem, and also common. Usually the thermostat is set too cold, or you've put food right in front of the cold-air vent from the freezer. Move the food and raise the setting by a degree.
